Stand up and look far into the web’s future. What do you see? You will see links, links and a seemingly infinite ocean of links. Your website is like a ship cruising on the crisp blue waters of this ocean. Links are like the guiding winds that push the sails of your website. Something what will be the only thread for you to hang on to the Internet which seems to have evolved out of the same big bang the Universe originated from. Links are the basic threads connecting the Internet together and will determine how effective your online promotions are going to be. Listed below are five of the best link-building strategies ever:
Strategies using content generation work best long term although they might not thrill you but it will at least ensure that you stay fit and fine and you rake in profits for the long term. Link building, first and foremost should never be manual. Actually, even reciprocating isn’t much of a big deal because Google is getting more ‘Semantic’ by the day and they are turning out to be smart at a faster rate than your manual or reciprocal link building speeds.
Great content is not enough: Everyone rants about good content, unique content and great content — actually, like someone mentioned, the web is a popularity contest, big time. Your content might be the best, but to get what it deserves, it must be made popular. So your effort doesn’t end with writing great content, it has to go beyond that into the popularity charts and you have push it until it gets there.
Guest Blogging and Guest writing: One of the best ways to generate quality content without much effort on your part but still generate amazing links is to introduce guest blogging or guest writing for your blog or site respectively. See how it works — firstly, the guests write for one or two reasons namely recognition or credentials and monetary benefits. Either ways — they are bound to write well. Secondly, these writers or bloggers will link to their own content on your blog or website from theirs. Quite some link-love, isn’t it? You are actually hitting three birds with one stone — you are getting great content, someone is writing for you and then you are generating contextual links that Google treats with respect. However, stay out of blogging groups or networks and try to rope in individual bloggers and writers.
Article writing: Article writing has long been advocated as one of the best DIY ways to generate links to your website and is the king when it comes to link-baiting techniques. You can write any number of authoritative articles based on your relevant keywords and ensure that you submit them to some of the leading article directories. Just ensure that you write a focused and a brief bio about yourself or your company with a simple link back to your website.
Content Networks: How about another round of 3-birds-and-one-stone game? If you submit your articles ( in addition to the article directories) to various content networks like Helium, Suite101, hub pages, etc, you would stand to earn some money if your article is popular enough to gain some views, gets you noticed along with improving your credibility and also links back to your website — Truly link-baiting with aplomb.
Submit to online forums: Depending on what topic your website deals with or the industry it is in, there are bound to be some popular forums for you to go visit. Provide value there by helping the newbies or those who are looking to know something by answering their questions, but never saying a word about your business. There are forums like startupnation.com for example that have scores of users helping each other out of various business situations and discussing everything to do with business. Make sure that you have your link down there as a signature or in the profile (if signatures are not allowed).
If you have noticed, most of the strategies discussed above are mostly to generate content and that is really what the Internet is all about. The more value you provide to your readers, the more popular you are bound to get thereby splashing your link all over the Internet for a good measure. Google wants you to do it like this and this is where your long term profits lie.

I think the most pertinent point about this post is that not only content must be good, it must be popular to attract more traffic. To me the substance of the content is the backbone of the website that had to be supported by other means such as links.

What liowkc says is right. Content alone will not give us the traffic. But the theme also matters. It must be popular enough and a hotly debated topic so that we get many search terms mapping the site. Article writing and forum submissions are one of the best ways to do this.

That’s true. You have to promote yourself otherwise your site will be lost in the mess that is the internet. Quality and unique content IS extremely important. You can promote the heck out of your site and get millions of visitors, but they’re not going to stick around whats the sense?

Another great article. Content is the indeed king. Of course the niche matters but fresh, unique content is still what gets the visitors. I have personally experienced this out too. When you have good content you’ll even get links from unexpected sites. Guest writing seems like a good idea. I’m going to try this and see what response it gets. Thanks.

Yeah whatever you are blogging about has to be important to people. There’s no point in blogging about something that no one is really interested in. Plus the promoting will help everything in the end. And I do like the idea of guess writing, that sounds good and gives readers different view points on things.

No one will do it for you unless you are paying them. If you are thinking of hiring someone then you can go to digitalpoint and hire someone to work for you. I’m sure that you will get your money’s worth. Another thing that might work is to spam those url’s on related sites.

Good tips to link building. Another good way that I have learned is if you have a topic of expertise then write an e-book on that topic pointing back to your site and give it away to people who want to research and learn more about that industry. You could even allow the readers to upload and share the e-book with their site traffic. This will do two things a) The more sites uploading your e-book the more the backlinks pointing to your website because the search engine spiders crawl the e-books as well. b) People who are downloading the e-book will surely visit your website from the link in there and if your site is good then you may gain more repeat traffic.

I think people will do it for you — if you’re talking about referring other people to your site — and you won’t need to pay them if they’re getting something else out of the relationship. Usually it’s getting their name out in front of more of the public as well.

I doubt continuous promotions should be done, because you should not over do it. Link building should be done in a regular basis and you need to be patient to wait for these links to mature.

I have a question about one of the techniques you mentioned. You said guest blogging can generate good backlinks but what do you do if your site isn’t a blog ?

I think having great content is the most important thing when developing you website. Great content on your site would have people linking back to your site. It is what makes your site popular and what makes visitors coming back to your website.
