The relevance of the product being promoted to the content of the website also plays an important role in the conversion rate. I usually pick affiliate products that already offer banners and promotional help on the affiliate pages. I try not to go with their keywords as every other affiliate would be using them, ultimately making it too hard to rank well for those keywords. But then again, I didn't go into it just expecting to fill out the form and start making money. I go to a lot of online vendor expos and similar things and promote there. They are fun and simple and I meet a lot of other people in affiliate marketing and we share ideas and purchase items we need from each other rather than direct from the companies.
