Easy SEO Tips

Written by: webmaster, filed within: Optimization

If you have never really managed a web site before, the term search engine optimization can be a little daunting. Many people believe that only professionals are capable of optimizing a site, while others operate under the misconception that SEO is not necessary. Both points are wrong, and it is actually quite easy to implement basic SEO techniques on your site, no matter what your skill level is. Here are some of the easiest ways that you can optimize your own site.

1. Develop the right kind of content. When you are writing content for your site, it is important that you spend a little extra time developing it. Make sure that all the words are spelled correctly and that you keep it short, about 200 to 500 words per page. The content should be descriptive and contain keywords that are relevant to your site in a logical manner. Avoid the common mistake of “stuffing” keywords by using too many. The right density is about 2-3%. As an example, for a page that has 200 words, you would want to use a keyword no more than four times.

2. Pick the right keywords. A lot of site owners think that adding popular keywords is the key to SEO, but this is false. If a keyword does not fit your page, you should not use it. For example, if your page is dedicated to plumbing a keyword of a popular celebrity’s name would not work. You may get extra traffic, but they will quickly leave the page when they do not find what they expect. Put yourself in your visitor’s shoes. Picture yourself doing a search for a particular keyword. Would you be happy if you wasted your time clicking on to a site that had absolutely nothing to do with what you were looking for?

3. Don’t forget the little things. Something as simple as a page title can mean the difference between a ranking in the bottom 50 or a ranking in the top 3 results pages on a search engine. Make sure that you title every single page on your site. Most web editors will allow you to do this. Don’t use titles that mean something only to you, again, you need to think about your visitors. When they do a search, the title of the page will display on the results page. If you have a page titled Home, your results are going to be ranked well below the optimized sites that actually have something to do with that word.

Pick a title that will describe what is on that page. Instead of Home, you could use the title of your site as well as keywords that fit your content. For example, if your site sells makeup, you could use the title of your brand, as well as the keywords: fashion makeup at discount prices. Think of the title as a mini sales copy. This will help you pick one that will broadcast to your potential visitors exactly what your site is about. In addition, you are increasing your chances of getting a higher ranking for each of these words.

A good article and it really breaks down some of the basics of SEO, which can be confusing at the best of times.

You make some great points about the keywords - over the years some myths have grown up around them and it seems that some people hang on to those beliefs without question - little do they understand that it’s quality rather than quantity!

I remember when I first started my first blog. Back then I don’t know that there was such a term as SEO. I only write on my blog twice a week and did not do any SEO. After 3 months of blogging I was sad that I didn’t get a page rank at all. I’m glad that I finally learned about SEO. I’m currently applying it to my site.

Picking the right keywords is extremely important. If you pick the wrong ones, you will never make any money and in some cases you may never even get traffic. Focus your titles around your keywords as well as this can help you with the search engines so they can find you.

Well put article. Very simple to understand. It is important to pick the right keywords, but also to pick keywords that are relevant to the content of your website. Focus of the site should involve your keywords. Also making sure that you keep up on the content even if it very little changes can make a very big difference when it comes to SEO.
