The ability to survive in the search filled world of the web can be very tricky. A web designer has to take into consideration the ability to bring in traffic, the competition, as well as the different algorithms of the search engines. Eventually a web designer has to gain a detailed understanding of what needs to be done to gain exposure on search results, as well as what to avoid. A single step in the wrong direction can get a website penalized and perhaps even removed from search results all together. Often times these steps occur without any real realization that it has occurred, and as such is very difficult to recover from.
The first step in getting a web site moving on the search results pages is to survey the websites in the market being looked at and setting the site up in a way that best fits getting it noticed by search engines. The ability to adapt to the environment around a specific market place allows the web site to flourish. The keys really are finding relevant information that isn’t necessarily available on most other sites, and making sure the content stays up to date.
The next step is to find the content that will have the greatest impact on the market. The primary objective here is to find out what information is most likely not only to bring people in, but also to keep them long enough to notice the rest of the site. While bringing people in for a single article is good, getting that article to funnel them back into the main portion of the site is even more important. Also important is to find information that will be found in multiple searches. The more ways it can be searched, the more often it is likely to be found.
Once the content type and style has been decided upon, the next step is putting into place a method that will acquire traffic through search engines. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, the first of which is to acquire a massive amount of content for the site. This can be done through internal or external channels depending on the content. This make the site as a whole far more searchable, as multiple articles will hit in any search about the content being offered. Another option for gaining a higher ranking in searches is to have a high utilization of links from other sites. By being associated with other sites, especially those that are considered authorities on the content subject, the site becomes more attractive to search engines and users alike.
Once these steps have been followed and a site has risen higher on the search result pages, it becomes increasingly important to continue adding content to the site. As the information begins to fall away from relevancy, the search engines will begin to let the page fall again. The main mistake that web designers can make is to sit back with what they have once they have made it to the first page of results. Staying on that front page can often times be just as difficult as getting there in the first place.

I enjoyed this read, lots of useful information. I myself have begun practicing back links through directories, and by doing so I have seen a dramatic difference in my ranking. Keeping content fresh is also a important aspect of SEO practices and site ranking. Great read.
