If you have a business website, search engine optimization can make the difference between great search engine placement with increased web site traffic and languishing undiscovered on the web for years until your business inevitably fails. There are many companies that specialize in optimizing your web site for indexing by Google or Yahoo, but not all of them are created equal. There are things you should be aware of when selecting an SEO company.
Email solicitation: SEO companies should never contact you blindly through emails. These companies have mined your data through automatic web site scanners and haven’t examined your site to see of you can actually benefit from their services. Reputable SEO companies do not operate this way. If you need an SEO company, do you research an find one that matches your needs.
Ranking Guarantees: If an SEO company guarantees a particular page ranking, run! No one company has any power to guarantee a top search engine placement. The algorithm that search engines use to rank pages is complicated and page rankings change daily based on a number of factors including keyword density and incoming links. You do not have to contract a company to submit your web site to a search engine. All major search engines allow your to submit your link for free. Don’t make the mistake of paying for it.
Secrecy- Steer clear of companies that won’t explain their search engine optimization procedures. If an SEO company engages in deceptive search engine ranking techniques, you could be the loser. Search engines will delete pages from their ranking system if they detect fraudulent practices. Ignorance is no excuse. You are ultimately responsible for what’s on your page. Don’t let an unscrupulous company cost you your search engine placement.
Requiring links- A reputable SEO company will never require that you place a link to their site on your home page. SEOs may also place your link on their page, but this is not a high quality link and will not significantly affect search engine placement.
Advertising Masked as Search Engine Placement- Some search engines place ads at the top of their search engine results. These are not true results and are paid for by various companies. They are not the same thing as having a high page rank. Make sure that you SEO company is actually optimizing your page and is not using your money to buy ads that won’t affect your page ranks.
Before choosing any Internet company, do your research. Ask for lists of clients and check the company’s reputation among other SEO companies. If you can’t find any information or only negative or lukewarm references, keep looking.

Sadly I’ve personally seen tons of these advertisements, guaranteeing people the top rankings in search engines and spam people’s email with advertisements about their so called “services”. Kind of sad that people would go to these measures to trick people out of their hard earned money.

Any person who guarantees a top placing in a search engine is either doing something bad for your website, or paying to have your site listed in that manner. Once upon a time in the 90’s you could not even guarantee a top spot, but you were more likely to be placed higher because of the fact there was less competition. With algorithms changing as frequently as they do now days it is harder and harder to reach those spots and some engines only allow you to have them if you pay.
