Setting up a Ecommerce Site

If you are new to the world of selling products online, it is actually quite easy to get your store up and running in no time at all. Whether you just have a few products you’d like to sell or you want to completely establish an online presence, here are a few tips to make the process as painless as possible.

1. Start with a plan of action. You’ll need to sit down and decide what you want to sell and how you plan to promote your ecommerce store. If you already have a business, it should be pretty easy to plan out what you’ll be selling online. If not, you may want to do some market research to see how many competitors sell similar products and what they do to market their stores. It is always a good idea to research the competition to see what they are doing to increase their sales. You can then employ these techniques in your own store.

2. Once you have your plan of action, you will need to get a space to put your store. If you already have a website, you can move onto the next step. If not, your best bet is to find a hosting company that offers ecommerce hosting accounts. These typically include all the tools you’ll need to easily set up your own store.

3. Picking the right shopping cart. There are numerous different shopping carts that are available for ecommerce sites. Many are free and offer advanced options that help you manage your store effectively. Two of the most popular carts are ZenCart and OSCommerce. Both are completely free and offer add-ons to help you run your business. It’s a good idea to try one of these free carts before you actually spend money on one.

4. Once you have your store set up on your site, you’ll need to begin adding your products. Make sure that you write really good descriptions for each product. Search engines will be indexing your store and you want to make sure that you have content they’ll be interested in. When a search engine lists a page, they commonly include the first two to three sentences on the page. If it is a product description, searchers will know exactly what you have for sale. Otherwise, you could be losing business because of an obscure description.

5. You will also need to use quality images to sell your products. If the manufacturer of a product already has a picture of what you are selling, see if you can use it on your site. Otherwise, you may need to hire a professional photographer to make sure that your products are photographed in the best way. Remember, people don’t have the benefit of actually holding your item and seeing it in the real world. You want your pictures to be as accurate as possible.

Once you have all of these things in place, you can begin promoting your ecommerce site to the general public.

    Good post. I think this is the right approach as you would be planning your money-making strategy from the get go. As for your products, think outside the box. Don’t just sell software that everyone else is selling, unless you have something new to bring to the table. People will appreciate you specializing in a certain area.

    Great, this guide seems to work for me, however I do tend to just sell things on eBay, that seems to bring me in some money, I would however say that if i wasn’t lazy and had some spare money to start off with then I would make my own ecommerce site. Unfortunately I just do not have that flexibility at the moment.

    I have to single out your first tip on this article. PLAN OF ACTION. A very very important step that many people tend to over look. They think, “Oh I have this and this to sale. I’ll open an estore” then they do and there are no sales and many don’t even realize they need to promote on their own that google isn’t going to do it ALL for them. Great points here.
