Simply put, ‘Web analytics’ is the process by which you can measure your site statistics, analyzing the behavior of website traffic to determine how effective a website and its advertising is. There are a number of benefits to using web analytics for your website.
It is typical for most businesses to do a little bit of data analysis, as this information can be used to determine profit rate, loss rate, sales and market interest. If you want to develop and establish a strong online presence for your website, there is one tool that is more powerful than any other when it comes to collecting the necessary data for adequately promoting your website.
Web analytics have been gaining in popularity among websites, portal sites and blogs because it is a process that is used to analyze market trends, as well as to identify the users and visitors to websites. Web analytics are also used to determine how website users behave on your website, making it an exceptional tool for determining the latest website trends, as well as individual preferences of your users when it comes to website features. Here are the three main benefits for web analytics:
1 - Web analytics allow you to better monitor your website visitors and users.
Using web analytics, you can find out how long your visitors stay on your website, who they are, and even where they came from before visiting your website. By using this information, you can determine how many times users visited your website, as well as what individual web pages they gave preference to upon visiting or re-visiting. Web analytics tools can tell you the usage of your website down to the minutest details, even including the nationality and language of each of your visitors. Imagine what you can do with all of this information.
2 - Web analytics can help you optimize your website.
Once you have studied the actions of your website users and visitors, you can act accordingly, optimizing your website to improve these figures. You should also have a good idea at this point of what needs changing, and what aspects of your website may or may not appeal to your market. With this information, you can adjust different aspects of your website to better meet the needs of your visitors, and you can continue to track your web analytics to see what effect your changes are having on the effectiveness of your website.
3 - Web Analytics can help you formulate a plan for sales and online marketing.
Web analytics make it easier to prepare an online marketing plan and a generalized course of action for your website. Your plan will be more effective with web analytics because it will be based on cold hard fact rather than simple probabilities. Through the use of web analytics, you can determine what your target audience actually wants by tracking the information that they are viewing, and learning what it is that they are looking for. You can attract more clients if you know what they want and cater specifically to that.

Analytics is important but can you recommend any particular programs? I use Google Analytics at the moment but I always worry that maybe Google will use that information for other things. They are already close to world domination - do I really want them to know everything about my websites?

Web analytics are very important. You need to watch your stats to see what is doing well and which strategy is not doing so well. Without these tools you will not be able to reevaluate your methods. Of course, don’t waste too much time on it as it can take away a lot of time when looking at stats.
