Use SEO to Optimize Your Site for Success.

Search engine optimization is a vital part of your site’s success. There are numerous ways that you can optimize your site and most can be done in just a few minutes. If you’re just starting out or you need to optimize an older site, these techniques can be very beneficial in helping you raise your search engine ranking and become more visible to new readers.

The first thing you should start with are meta tags and page titles. Although a page title seems like a simple thing, it can mean the difference between a high ranking on search engine results and no ranking. When you are naming a page, make sure to include keywords in the title that are relevant to the content. For example, if that particular page is about books, use a page title that includes the title of the book and the author’s name. Now, when someone searches for that book or author, your page will come up.

Meta tags should be used to effectively describe your site’s content. You can also use a few that may not be completely related, but do not go overboard. You want to provide potential visitors with qualified results. Otherwise, they may get frustrated that your site won’t provide them with what they originally wanted and they will leave. You may need to frequently update your meta tags as your site changes to increase your chances of a better ranking.

One other area that is often overlooked is the use of image tags. A search engine spider cannot see an image. They see text and file names only. Try assigning descriptions of a picture to each image. This will help the spider catalog your page more effectively and will result in better rankings for that page.

Now that the mechanics are out of the way, you can focus on the actual content of your site. Ecommerce sites typically have the most trouble when it comes to content. Your store may be your main page and there just isn’t room for content that may relate to your products. Try adding a company blog that discusses pertinent news or your products. This will give spiders more to index and increase your chances of being discovered.

In this same vein, make sure that your product descriptions are optimized as well. By adding keywords to these descriptions, you can give search engines more to index and your product pages will begin displaying more readily. Again, don’t overdo it, just make sure that the keywords are directly related to the product itself.

By combining these techniques, you can be certain that your site will begin to enjoy higher rankings. Search engines have different algorithms, but these are general rules that will apply across the board. Try using only good practices when optimizing your site to ensure that you don’t end up on a search engine blacklist. While it may be appealing to try to game the engines, you’ll only end up hurting your chances over the long run.
